Creamy Effect.
This is an effect I love using on my icons. I call it the 'creamy' effect.
After cropping and sharpening once, this is what I'll start out with.
1. Make a new layer, and select a dark navy blue colour.
2. Set that top layer to 'Exclusion'.
3. Go to Layer >> Merge Visible.
There you go! That's the 'creamy' effect for you. It may not work against all pictures, but it's still a pretty cool effect for your icons. I wouldn't recommend it for layouts, but for icons it's really useful.
